Your eyes are the window to your soul…. Now I love a good metaphor but pre-products and first thing in the morning, my eyes are hardly the twinkling, fluttery windows I’d like them to be. More like soulless grey curtains keeping rays of sunshine out. Boo.
Used correctly, eyelash curlers are the equivalent of fancy Venetian blinds, opening up your eyes and making everything look better, brighter and more polished. Told you I liked metaphors.
The ultimate in eyelash curlers is widely agreed to be Shu Uemura but there is a big divide over the perfect curl and the £20 departing from your purse (Me, a quantity over quality girl? GUILTY.) Sooooo on a recent 3for2 adventure at Boots, I ended up buying this mid-range pair from Kiss USA as a sort of teeny-tiny baby step before I take the plunge….

On first glance
Coming from the RED by Kiss range, these are meant to be salon-quality curlers. The curlers themselves look stunning. Shiny gold with cushioned black handles, the loaded spring linking the handle to the head which I guess is meant to apply an even pressure across the curl. It even comes with a spare rubber, sorry, ‘non-slip silicone’ pad. Sounds swish eh? Lets see photographic evidence.
Well, clearly after use, the curl exists. The venetian blinds have been installed. The question is, is it any better than the regular Boots eyelash curler which was about half the price?
Overall, I did enjoy buying the curlers, it’s nice to have a little bit of gold in your beauty bag but if it was a choice between buying these curlers and sacrificing something else, I would just stick with regular eyelash curlers. Metal ones though – not plastic.
I didn’t notice any particular benefits of the spring other than it keeps my curlers open when at resting state, and it likes to collect fluff in it’s spare time. How nice.
Just thought I should mention, aim for a squeezing motion rather than the common ‘clamp and hold’. A friend of a friend actually clamped off her eyelashes in one eye and had to wear falsies for months! Dudes, SHE CUT THEM OFF. And you thought it was just some beauty urban legend eh??
Not to frighten you before bed but seriously- gentle, squeezing motions! Five seconds is more than enough, especially if you work your way up the lash squeezing again halfway and at the tips. Also if you quickly blast the curlers under the hair dryer before using, the curl will hold for longer.
Face Value tip: Not an clamp and curl fan? After applying mascara, I often just close the curler and use the shape of the bend to push and hold my eyelashes in place. Again 5 secs will do. And in emergencies, the palms of your hands also work, except you end up with spider streaks on your palms and people WILL ask you if you’re feeling okay.
And with that little gem of how you can imagine my everyday life to be, I bid you GOODNIGHT. I have no idea how my body clock is going to adjust after New Year, any ideas?
ps- Still haven’t made my mind up whether to go for the Shu or not yet…
