With all the hype from awards season fiiiiinally dying down, it seems that The BRITS 2014 were an absolute age ago – but it’s not even been a month.
At The BRITS, the beauty buzz was definitely all about Jessie J’s lilac lips. The Daily Mail had a field day and Twitter was absolutely ablaze with comments but what do you think? Were they a Jessie Yay or were they a Jessie Nay?
Personally – when I first saw them, the first thing I thought was “ICHIBAN – for men!” Ohhh yeah, Jessie J rocking the Joey Tribbiani look. (Classic Friends episode, non?)
I normally love Jessie J’s edgy style and attitude. Her lilac lip was soo close to being perfection but the execution was just not right. The lilac shade was too pale, the accompanying bronzer too yellow and there was not quite enough definition in the face to really quite pull off a purple pout.
But hey, I’m not one to throw rocks and not think about what it’s like being on the other side. That’s right Face Value friends – I’M GOING TO TRY THE LILAC LIPSTICK LOOK and open myself up for judgement!!!
The Weapon Of Choice?
To trial this lavender lip, I’ve gone for the Stargazer Lilac Lipstick in 115. Born in the heart of the punk fashion scene, Stargazer have a fab range of unconventional colours and finishes – real modern makeup with an edge!
A bold layer of lilac in one sweep, the pigment in this Lilac lipstick is seeeerious business! Don’t let the simple packaging fool you, this lipstick has A LOT to offer.
So here we go!!! First of all – the Jessie Nay.
One swipe of lilac later and I look like a corpse. Too washed out, too pale – although I’ve got defined brows and eyes, it’s not quite enough. My lips look chalky, I look tired and also very very grey. SO MUCH SELF CRITICISM.
Bottom line: BOO.
It’s bad but (and this is a BIG BUT) … it’s not so far down the line that it’s irreparable. It can be fixed!
But how would I fix it? Well – let’s look back on my wise words at the time shall we?
Right – so more drama on the eyes? LETS DO IT. Bring on the false lashes and a wash of deep taupe over the lids! I also added some sculpting blush courtesy of across the cheeks for a splash of colour and life. We’re channeling big and bold, but still breathing yeah?

What do you think? Any better? Or still looking like a Zombie Zoe Dubs?
I actually think I love it! It’s a bit like a nude pink but just a bit more edgy. I’d team this with intense 60’s eyeliner flicks during the day, and big smokey drama eyes at night. Just don’t forget some colour in your face!!
FACE VALUE TIP: For ultimate wearability, I’ve added a tiny slick of sheer pink gloss over the top (it’s Urban Decay Lip Junkie in Flushed) A touch of gloss adds that bit of warmth you need in order to still look like you have a pulse!
|Perfect “living lilac” companions|
But wearability aside – this colour is a lovely shade which I wouldn’t normally wear and I’m glad I tried it. It brings an awesome supernatural cool to my look and lilac lips are definitely getting an outing at the local Shoreditch hipster haunts.
Oh yeah, and for a bit of fun I was playing around with the photo editing and ended up creating this cool David Bowie/space alien edit. As you do.
So what do you think? A supernatural cool or a supernatural fool? Are lilac lips out of this world or do they belong in it?
And what were your thoughts on Jessie Jay’s lilac lip? A Jessie Yay or a Jessie Nay?
