Off-piste Post: Incredible Meal at L’Enclume

Today is something a bit different – a little food photo diary of a very special restaurant I went to last weekend. I know people don’t always like it when a blog goes outside of its specialist subject but given that I’ve got no internet in my new flat yet, I’m doing this baby by phone and pictures of food is all I have at the moment!

But not just any ordinary food, I tell you. This is Trip-enducing, Great British Menu-winning food from L’Enclume in Cumbria.

The Story.

I booked it all as a surprise birthday present for Mr FV (who, at one point, was convinced we were going to IKEA) and we spent over 4 hours savouring TWENTY courses. Twenty courses! Oh yeah, and I had the wine flight too – hashtag boozed…

The food was incredible, the presentation was stunning and I can’t recommend a trip to Cartmel enough – it’s the home of sticky toffee pudding so not only did I eat twenty courses, I came back with pudding, fudge and enough Kendal mint cake for the next year (I swear it’s what the Energizer bunny eats, I seriously LOVE the stuff)

All photo credit is due to my very talented cousin Lap – a fantastic chef and stellar photographer, he has just opened a cool artisan bakery in Birmingham called Peel&Stone. It’s in a really unique location, under a railway arch – so get yerselves down there if you like the sound of fresh baked sourdough and salted caramel filled doughnuts!

Here are some highlights from the twenty…… enjoy!

Grilled plaice, cucumber, juniper, dill and cockle

Me and a big glass of El Pais

Valley venison, charcoal oil, mustard and fennel
Scallop, strawberry and caviar

Meadowsweet, cherries, cider and flowers

I’m getting hungry just looking at these pictures! It was a fantastic meal for a special occasion – you can find more about L’Enclume here.

And if you’re looking for another amazing eat, at a more local and lower price level, you can follow Peel & Stone in Birmingham! Their mobile wood-fired pizza oven is available for bookings (Shortlist scored their pizza 5 out of 5!) and they do a fabulous brunch on weekends too….

…..You got me. I keep saying I’ve got no internet when cleeeearly I’ve just been busy scoffing my face. Guilty! Now where’s that kendal mint cake…

Where are the best places you’ve been to eat recently?

Any recommendations for either special occasions and sunday brunches?
