There is no denying it – Christmas is an expensive time of the year.
But what else are you spending on other than presents? Could you be saving money elsewhere instead?
No one wants to cut back on Christmas, so perhaps we need to think about other ways we can save.
Whether it’s a routine spend on ‘non-necessaries’, or a cheeky one-off which actually end up happening more than once – it’s these little luxuries which add up.
But by how much?
To help us picture exactly HOW much this is all costing us – Legal & General have come up with a handy little habit cost calculator. It tells you how much you could be saving if you cut back on some of this spend. (and also where to invest it, i.e. the Legal General ISA)
Face Value Tip: Not sure what an ISA could do for you? Check out my Money Monday: What’s An ISA & a NISA? which I wrote.
Anyway – investing aside. What did my cost calculator tell me then?
Well, I plugged in my biggest vice – MAKEUP. No surprises there then. I then put in my monthly spend at £50 a month (I’m talking makeup and skincare and shampoo, so I think that’s not tooooo unreasonable… right? Right?!)
Anyway, regardless of my ridiculous makeup habit – the calculator worked out that in a year, I could have bought a new Laptop instead, bought 5 festival tickets – or gone on 1.5 holidays!
And that’s before I got started on the rest. Alcohol, Eating Out, Cigarrettes, Nights Out – whatever your vice is, you can find out how much you could be saving by using the Spending Calculator here.
What is your biggest spending problem?
It seems like mine is makeup.. and takeaways..and nights out…and shopping.. No extra holidays or laptops for me then.
